Artificial tears alone may be the solution for some dry eye patients. However, if you suffer from chronic dry eye and tears just aren’t enough to give you continued relief there are alternatives such as punctum plugs.
Punctum plugs are very small and are quickly and easily inserted by your eye care specialist into your tear duct (punctum) to keep your tear film on your eye longer. They function like a sink stopper to block your eye drains.
Several types of punctum plugs are available:
- Temporary plugs lasting up to three months for temporary dry eye that occurs after some types of surgery such as LASIK
- Permanent, but removable, plugs for patients with chronic dry eye or contact lens wearers
